This peel feels like silk

Hello!! Welcome to Peelcraft. We are a group of six students who look forward to making a better world with an ecological and innovative perspective.
Our main goal is to create fabrics made out of orange peel. We conceived this project upon realizing that much of our waste originates from parts of food we don’t consume. We decided to repurpose these peels rather than letting them go to waste. Thus, we aim to address two issues: repurposing food waste and promoting sustainable fashion.

Story
How did Peelcraft come to be?

We love orange juice as much as we love buying clothes. However, we realize the environmental cost these two habits have. Therefore, we have decided to create something new out of something we called waste.
As a team, we decided to make a new proposal of a fiber made out of orange peels, taking the best of both worlds and… Creating something with a lot of value. We are using a new fiber called Lyocell, which is made out of cellulose, the material of the orange peel.
And we hope that it can be a great product for future generations to come.
Join us throughout this project and become one of the future buyers as well as environment supporters. :)
Some context…
According to data from various sources, the textile industry can on average pollute around 20 million tons of textile waste per year, in addition to consuming large amounts of water and energy. In Mexico, in 2020, approximately 4.2 million tons of oranges were produced, according to the Agricultural and Fishery Information Service (SIAP).
What are our goals?
Converting into a b2b enterprise to create different products that benefit from lyocell fiber and wish to change the current manufacturing processes.
our mission
A new way of looking orange and awesome
Lyocell is a type of semi-synthetic fiber made from cellulose. It is known for its environmentally friendly production process and properties. Here are some key points about Lyocell:
Production
Lyocell is produced using a closed-loop process that recycles almost all the solvents and water used, making it more sustainable compared to other fibers. The wood pulp (in this case orange peel), typically sourced from sustainably managed forests, is dissolved in a non-toxic solvent, and then extruded to form fibers.
Properties
Softness: Lyocell fibers are known for their smooth, soft texture, making them comfortable against the skin.
Strength: The fibers are strong and durable, both when dry and wet.
Moisture Absorption: Lyocell has excellent moisture-wicking properties, making it breathable and comfortable to wear in various climates.
Biodegradability: Being made from cellulose, Lyocell is biodegradable and compostable under industrial conditions.
Uses
Due to its desirable properties, Lyocell is used in a variety of applications, including clothing (like T-shirts, dresses, and activewear), home textiles (such as bed linens and towels), and even in non-woven products like baby wipes

How to: in a nutshell

Creating lyocell fabric from orange peel involves a specialized process that integrates the extraction and processing of cellulose from the peels.
- Cellulose Extraction:
- Collection and Preparation
- Isolation of Cellulose
- Dissolution:
- Solvent Preparation
- Dissolution Process
- Fiber Spinning:
- Extrusion
- Stretching and Washing
- Fiber Processing and Fabrication:
- Drying and Cutting
- Weaving or Knitting
This innovative process leverages waste materials (orange peels) and combines them with sustainable production techniques to create environmentally friendly lyocell fabric.
